Adiponectin is a 30 kDa protein that represents approximately 0.01 % of serum proteins. The ADIPOQ gene is the most highly expressed gene in adipocytes. Nevertheless, serum adiponectin concentration is inversely related to body fat content.

The protein, consisting of 244 amino acids, has a globular domain that shows a structural similarity with TNF alpha. The adiponectin monomers form a trimer as the basic form; in addition to this trimer, adiponectin is present in different multimers (hexamer, high-molecular weight) and influences energy metabolism.

In addition to the test system for the detection of human adiponectin, Mediagnost also offers assays for the measurement of adiponectin in mice and rats (cf. Animal Assays).
